Jennifer Joan Stenhouse an Article by Eileen Mulligan - http://www.eileenmulligan.com
Jennifer Joan Stenhouse has more than thirty years experience in print and broadcasting journalism and written on everything from magazines and national newspapers to national and international TV news providers including ITN, ZDF and NBC. Jennifer has worked as a scriptwriter, producer, reporter and presenter as well as a programme editor. She has researched, produced and presented TV documentaries, live current affairs programmes such as Powerhouse, Channel 4’s political agenda setting show, and commercial DVDs. Jennifer knows how powerful and compelling stories are, the media can influence opinions, affect our decisions and evoke strong emotions within us. But what about our own personal story, the script we live our life by?
Ten years ago Jennifer decided to move away from the highly competitive media sector. Having carved out a successful career, colleagues may have considered it madness for Jennifer to embark on a complete career change. The corporate culture of TV news and current affairs is not one you can imagine lending itself to personal growth, spiritual retreats and healing energies. Jennifer’s involvement in healing goes back many years and although she could stride effortlessly between mainstream, and what some may regard as esoteric, she felt that area of her life was not so much a secret from her work colleagues, but best kept private. Her work in media training helped transform people’s lives. Giving people a voice and teaching them how to communicate effectively encouraged Jennifer to train in NLP and take her teaching and coaching skills to a new level.
‘We all use stories, all the time. They’re the currency of our lives, the medium through which we make sense of it all.’
Jenniffer passionately believes that when our life is not going in the direction we want it to, we can drop the story and begin on a fresh page. ‘We all use stories, all the time. They’re the currency of our lives, the medium through which we make sense of it all. If you’re frustrated, afraid, confused, unhappy, broke, overwhelmed or haven’t got a clue who to turn to – that’s one story,’ says Jennifer, continuing, ‘now imagine a very different story, one where you live a life you love. You’ve identified what you want, you’re going for it, with ease and grace and with the support of someone you can trust.
It’s easy to see why Jennifer’s clients feel they can trust her and are in capable hands, for not only is Jennifer a former media savvy correspondent; she has an impressive list of qualifications in self-help and personal growth. Along with being an NLP Master Practitioner, LAB (Language and Behaviour) Profile Consultant Trainer, Certified Prosperity Guide, she also has accreditations in Group Leadership Dynamics (non-verbal communication and influencing techniques), and Success Factor Modelling. As one of the UK’s foremost experts in language and behaviour – who better to help you write your ultimate life-story? A page turner packed with positive text and success in every chapter.
Jennifer has a knack of combing an air of authority with a non-judgmental and compassionate manner. Perhaps it’s her extensive experience and knowledge that creates the element of authority. Years spent working in current affairs and as a media trainer are reflected in a sophisticated professionalism. But Jennifer’s warmth and humour immediately puts you at ease. Whilst you don’t feel you have to mind your Ps and Qs, Jennifer may challenge you to question common-held beliefs you have and their validity. After all it’s often inherent beliefs and the opinions of others, be they parents, teachers, friends or work colleagues, which shape our opinions not only of ourselves, but the world we live in.
‘Will you still speak to me when you’re a millionaire?’
When Jennifer’s mother asked her ‘Will you still speak to me when you’re a millionaire?’ the irony of the remark was not lost on Joan, even experts are not immune to family patterns and the unease that can be felt by a family member when you move outside their personal perception of you. Jennifer’s media career may have sat comfortably with her mother’s perception of success, but perhaps one of her daughter - as a self-made business woman – upset the running order. Whilst Jennifer is amused at the notion that her own mother could even contemplate that she’d allow financial success to act as some sort of minesweeper; removing or neutralising family relationships, Jennifer’s aware of the challenge people face when they embark on a new life story or different path. Family and friends often panic, worry that they will somehow be left behind; if they struggle to visualise you in a new role, it’s understandable they see no place for themselves. Jennifer’s firm grasp of how change can send shock waves to our nearest and dearest is a reassuring testament to her expertise and life experience.
‘Can you stop telling me what you can’t do for me and tell me what you can do for me!’
Technology may have provided us with multiple means to communicate, but Joan is concerned there is an increasing phenomenon and generation of individuals who are struggling with basic communication skills. We can text, Skype and connect on social media, but is there any evidence that virtual communication helps us to fully engage with someone and make a meaningful connection? Few customers would thank technology for bringing us call-centres, which often leaves the consumer irate when they have to contend with compartmentalised communication. Jennifer provides an example that will strike a chord with many, on a recent call to a customer service department she said to the unhelpful guy at the end of the phone, ‘Can you stop telling me what you can’t do for me and tell me what you can do for me!’ I suspect that was a politer approach than he’s accustomed to, as Jennifer has an abundance of patience and tolerance. But even with her finely tuned communication skills, there was no getting beyond communication lockdown.
‘When you have the language you can be the author of your business and career success.’
One has to question the message too many organisations are giving to their customers. What’s the point in factoring out contracts to call centres if customers are left with the message – we’ll answer the phone to you, but we’re not actually going to communicate with you or listen to you! Inadequate training means the customer pays a high price for companies saving costs. Jennifer’s work is in demand by the corporate sector, and as she says, ‘when you have the language you can be author of your business and career success.’ Facilitating effective communication allows staff to think and talk outside the box. When you only provide a person with one script to run with they’ll get the same outcome over and over again. In the case of the unfortunate call-centre worker it can be a day filled with constant abuse from frustrated customers. However, in your own life, if you have a limited script you’ll see limited results. Jennifer is running a six week teleseminar course which shows you how to; redesign your life and leave behind what doesn’t serve you, how the ‘Law of Attraction’ works and why it doesn’t for some, and how to start living your dream using the 4 pillars of success. You can count on her course being a bestseller!
